Dirty Bits

This is the part of the newsletter where you can catch a glimpse of the inner workings of the band. What makes those guys tick, anyway? This month we've asked The DoneFors respectively who they're biggest musical role models are.

Paul's
role models
:
- Oliver Nelson
- Adam Rogers
- Willie Nelson

Janine
's role models
:
#1. Joni Mitchell - Apart from being one of the most brilliant song-writers going, Joni's unflinching eye for quality and detail is completely enviable. I also love the fact that she started making records well in to her late twenties. It makes me feel far younger than I sometimes do.

#2. Patty Griffin - The simplicity of Patty's words and melodies is what makes them so delicious. She tells a beautiful story without wasting words. A career that she leads with grace and talent shows a sincere maturing. She's always been best in my books.

#3. Emma-Lee
- Local indie bell and dear pal. Emma-Lee gets results because she works hard and has the vision, drive, and talent that everyone wishes they had to make it in this tough industry. I'm forever tearing pages from her book. Not hard on the eyes, either.

Liam's role models
:
#1. John Coltrane (tenor sax) - He was always searching to expand his voice and to plunge deeper into the mystical subtext of sound and music. In the later part of his career, he considered music to be a conversation with the divine. Not many people can express the universe in a song, but he could.

#2 Jason Mercer (bassist) - I am not familiar with the larger body of Jason Mercer's work. What I do know is that when I listened to his work on Ani Difranco's album, "To the Teeth" , it was the first time I'd really considered the melodic contribution that a bassist could make to a song.

#3 Kieran Overs (bassist) - I am continually impressed at how he makes more from less. His playing always imparts the need for a strong sense of functionality and voice leading by the bassist.

Brian
's role models
:
- João Carvalho
- Gandhi
- John Lennon
- Ray Dillard

AUGUST NEWS

August is upon us and it's a hot and sticky one (in some parts). We've got hot and sticky news for you here too...

New Download
You were one lucky kid if you managed to get your hands on a copy of our July free download "One by One". This month head over to www.thedonefors.com for a free download of "Last Thing You Do" (from the debut album How to have sex with Canadians).

Cameron House Residency

For the month of August The DoneFors are playing a residency at The Cameron House in Toronto. Come out and join us every Tuesday between 6pm and 8pm. Admission is pay what you can, and it's just fun after work times.

Blackshire Pub London
Join The DoneFors at The Blackshire Pub in London on Thursday, August 13th. It's an earlier show starting at 8:30pm. Our fantastic music-making pal Fraser will be opening up the night.

Dirty Bits
The DoneFors are hunkering down to do some serious writing over the next coming months and hatching plans for a new album.

Paul and Liam spent the month of July on the road with Toronto outfit Mr. Something Something spreading joy from Sudbury all the way to Texada Island in British Columbia. If you have not had a chance to check out the new MSS album Shine Your Face, you should do it! It's incredible.

Janine is about to release her new solo album Melancholia. Stay tuned to learn how you can pre-order your very own copy. Her 2005 album This is where we bury it has also been remastered and repressed, so if you've managed to wear out your old copy, you'll be able to replace it with a shiny new one. At the tail end of July, Janine spent a week in Wells, B.C. where she attended a songwriting workshop with three-time Juno Award winning songwriter David Francey and seriously gifted folk singer-songwriter Craig Werth. Stay tuned for a blog about this on Janine's Facebook Fan Page.

JULY NEWS

Welcome to The DoneFors June newsletter. Lots of goodness on the go and we've been hard at work. First thing's first.

New Download
Thanks to all who got their paws on a free download of "In a Cornfield" in June. What's up for July? A song about crows. Go to www.thedonefors.com to download your own copy of The DoneFors' song "One By One" (from the debut album How to have sex with Canadians).

June Shows
June had smatterings of good shows for the DoneFors. We made new musical buds with a great London-based songwriter named Fraser when we shared a stage with him at The London Music Club on June 4th. Seriously talented songwriter. We'll be sharing the stage with Fraser again this August 13th at the Blackshire Pub in London. More on that soon. Thanks also for Stephanie, Jay, and Lana for hosting us and showing us love. You guys are sweet!

With a return trip on June 5th to Windsor's CBC fave The Phog Lounge, we only reaffirmed that Windsor is a very cool town and that James O-L and the Villains and are a great Canadian band. Make sure to find out more about these guys. It's imperative. Thanks to Erin and Ken for making our stay cozy.

Collingwood, Ontario might be a one trick pony kind of town in terms of live music venues, but JD's Bar and Grill is a pretty cool place to play a live show. Despite an apparently atypical crowd for the night that consisted of young ducks mostly interested in soiling their livers and sniffing each other's crotches, we still managed to entertain and have a good time when we played JD's on June 12th! Our hip hop/roots songwriting bud Mark Harris opened the do and brought along his musical compadre Sean MacDonald.

This year at Burlington's Sound of Music Festival if you ventured out of the festival grounds you might've wandered by a makeshift stage built at the base of an apartment building. A revolving door of young local songwriters and some bigger bands from close by came out to play in support of a palliative care residence called The Carpenter House. Put on by the good guys at Careen and Barrage Records Store, The DoneFors were honoured to be a part of this unofficial stage for such a good cause.

The DoneFors were invited to be the musical guests for a comedy show at Toronto's Comedy Bar on June 21st. Very cool spot indeed and a great tribute to the fantastic comedy scene in Toronto. A great troupe of funny peeps called The Sketchersons put on a live sketch comedy show every Sunday (it's called Sunday Night Live). Each week there's a new guest host. The Sunday that we performed we played alongside friend and host Levi MacDougall.

After just returning from a long jaunt in Italy and Germany, our friend and talented musician Sarah Noni Metzner opened for The DoneFors at The Supermarket on June 25th. Armed with new tunes and well-worked pipes, Sarah charmed the crowd before the DoneFors hit the stage to make things go. Thanks to all who made it out, and especially to Callie and Tim for working door and merch.

Lights in the North
This past weekend The DoneFors thrilled the masses at Sudbury's Northern Lights Festival. With Brian's other band SuperstacK and Liam and Paul's band Mr. Something Something also performing, we were all super busy playing all kinds of music. So much fun! When all was said and done The DoneFors performed in various incarnations at over 8 performances over three days. WOW!

Dirty Bits
The DoneFors will be taking up residency every Tuesday in August at The Cameron House in Toronto (6pm to 8pm). We're just as thrilled as you are! Every show will be pwyc, so mosey down after work for a pint and some good tunes. The dates, to be exact, are Tuesday(s), August 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th.

Paul and Liam will be spending July on the road touring with Mr. Something Something. Their new album Shine Your Face is a beautiful piece of afro-funk art. Get your paws on it. And check out www.mrsomethingsomething.com for upcoming shows near you.

Brian is gearing up to build a log cabin in the woods somewhere in Northern Ontario. If you like heavy lifting and will work for nothing, go help Brian out.

Janine's new solo CD Melancholia goes to manufacture in a week! Information about pre-ordering a copy will be released soon. Janine also makes her way to Wells BC later this month to participate in a songwriting workshop with David Francey and Craig Werth and will also be playing a slot at the beautiful ArtsWells Festival.

JUNE NEWS

Welcome to The DoneFors June newsletter. Lots of goodness on the go and we've been hard at work. First thing's first.

Free Download
A new month is upon us and you either know or don't know what that means… A new FREE DoneFors download! You have until Monday to download "In My Blood", which is May's free download and in June we're pleased to feature "In a Cornfield" also off of our debut album How to have sex with Canadians. Go to the main page of www.thedonefors.com (right click the download button and save file) and it's all yours.

Upcoming Shows
LONDON ON, June 4th @ The London Music Club – The DoneFors play with local Londoner Fraser, who is wicked and awesome. If you're within a two-day drive of London, you'll want to make it out to this show. It's a fantastic multi-room venue in a huge old mansion house – quite gorgeous. Be there!

WINDSOR ON, June 5th @ Phog Lounge – The DoneFors are big huge fans of Windsor, The Phog Lounge and especially James O-L and the Villains. We shared the stage with James and the guys back in February at Phog, and James pulled a ‘Phil Collins' sitting in for his own drummer while belting out his very sweet contemporary rock/roots vocals. A match made in chocolate pudding we think.

COLLINGWOOD ON – June 12th @ JD's Bar & Grill - We've never played here before, but we're really looking forward to sharing the stage with hip-hop/folkster Mark Harris who will open. Be there! BURLINGTON ON – June 19th @ C&B Records – The DoneFors play the unofficial stage at the Sound of Music Festival. A three day charity concert with all proceeds to benefit The Carpenter Hospice. We hit the stage at 8:30pm.

TORONTO ON, Jun 25th @ The Supermarket – We've been looking forward to this one. Like returning to the scene of a beautiful crime, our multiple O on Toronto, this time the beautiful and talented singer-songwriter Sarah Noni Metzner will open. Sarah's been touring through Germany and Italy since January, so we're crossing our fingers that she brings some sausages and pasta to the show. You won't want to miss this one. It's gonna be off the hook.

New Video
It's true! This month The DoneFors will once again be teaming up with CONartist Films to make another fantastic music video. We're excited about the concept and getting to work with Chad, Christina and Tom again. This time we'll make the cornbread and chili. You can view our first video for "In a Cornfield" click here.

Social Utilities
Facebook - The DoneFors would like to invite fans and music enthusiasts to help us out in the Facebook world. If you have a facebook account, log in and go to The DoneFors fan page. In the left hand menu click on "Suggest to Friends" which allows you to select friends that you think would appreciate The DoneFors. This makes a massive difference in increasing the reach of our music. Your friends (if they know you well) trust your good taste in good music, and might be keen to listen to The DoneFors if you tell ‘em to do it, rather than a stranger or a random poster. www.facebook.com/pages/The-DoneFors/8241112949

Dirty Bits
Brian's been on tour for May with his rock band SuperstacK. They've been showing the east coast of Canada who's boss with their huge trio sound. Brian is also excited about launching his new website soon, which is currently being designed by fellow DoneFor Janine.

Liam just finished another year at Humber College. Next year he'll be taking astronomy, wood shop, and economics. Liam's other band – Mr. Something Something – will be releasing their 4th full-length album Shine Your Face on June 3rd with two shows at The Supermarket in Toronto (8pm and 10pm).

Paul spent much of May nursing a chopped-off fingertip and a black eye. Paul does not like pigeons…maybe even hates them, and because of this he's been building up universal karma by saving worms roasting on sidewalks and tossing them back into the grass.

Janine won a contest for her song "Means to My End". She's been rewarded entrance to a 3-day songwriting workshop with David Francey and Craig Werth in Wells BC, a performance slot at Artswells Festival, a CBC radio spot, an article in BC Musician Magazine, and recording time with one of her musical heroes Corwin Fox! We're all really proud of Janine, who coincidentally shares the prize with fellow singer-songwriter and our family member James Lamb. Janine also builds websites…check these babies out: Melissa McClelland (Six Shooter Records artist), Mavreen David Photography, Aurelia Engstrom (jazz/cabart vocalist), and The Good Lovelies (folk/roots trio - coming early June)! View Janine's online design portfolio here.

The DoneFors want to go on tour with Tom Waits, Willie Nelson, Patty Griffin, Stuart MacLean and The Vinyl Café, or maybe Cher. If you know any of them, can you help us hook that up? Seriously.

In Closing
You need to know that any gesture at supporting the arts is immeasurable. Your support of The DoneFors is a huge deal to us. Whether you lend a copy of our disc to your best friend to rip, or whether you bring your blind date to a live show. Those gestures help to spread the joy, and give new people the gift of good music. The smallest financial gestures make an impact. If all you can afford is one 99 cent track off of the Itunes store, we feel the love. It also keeps up moral and confidence that we're on the right track. So I encourage you to support us and any other artists who mean something to you. Thanks for listening.

To buy a copy of How to have sex with Canadians click here.

To visit the Itunes store to buy a track click here.

To make a straight-up, karma-boosting, no-strings-attached financial donation to The DoneFors click here.

And in turn, we'll keep the music coming.

MAY NEWS

Greetings to all of you DoneFors friendlies. To kick it off we would like to tell you that you look lovely today. We’re not trying to hit on you. On purpose. This is our May Newsletter. We have things to tell you! So gather ‘round and lean in. This is going to be a ride, of sorts. Off we go....

Buy How To Have Sex With Canadians
If you haven't had the chance to purchase a copy of our new album - How to have sex with Canadians - yet, now is your chance! Visit our online store to order your copy directly from The DoneFors (www.thedonefors.com). Or you can buy it online at Itunes (http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?id=303385910&s=143455)! But, the best way to get your paws on a CD and support The DoneFors is to come out to a live show, boogie a little, have some pop, and then buy an album from the band, which leads us to our next topic of the day....

One More Kick At The Dog

The DoneFors (as you have guessed), have been doing a lovely residency at a cozy spot in Parkdale (Toronto, that is) called Not My Dog. Every Thursday during the month of April we hunkered down and played shows and made tasteless jokes. As the weeks have progressed the crowds have swelled and the good times have got gooder. Each week a different hand-pick opening act would hit the stage to astound. Thus far we’ve been graced with Nick Zubeck, Ian Reid, blueVenus, and Mark Harris (each dangerously fantastic). Cutting to the chase… The DoneFors have only ONE SHOW LEFT for our residency, and it happens TONIGHT! The endearingly brilliant songwriter Karyn Ellis will be opening up the show (10:30ish). We only ask a donation of a pay what you can afford in exchange for a good time. Come join us for our final show, and be amazed and more that slightly entertained. (1510 Queen Street West).
*Note: The DoneFors DO NOT condone the kicking of dogs. Don’t kick dogs… or else!

Shows In Different Area Codes
Shows are fun! And here are some fun upcoming shows for The DoneFors and for you!

HAMILTON, ON – Corktown Pub on May 2nd – w/ Shannon Butcher and Micah Barnes formerly of the Nylons (show begins with The DoneFors on at 8:30pm)

GUELPH, ON – Jimmy Jazz on May 7th

LONDON, ON – The London Music Club on June 4th – w/ Fraser

WINDSOR, ON – Phog Lounge on June 5th – w/ James O-L and the Villains

BURLINGTON, ON – C&B Records on June 19th – outside stage (fundraiser for palliative care hospital)

TORONTO, ON – The Supermarket on Jun 25th – w/ Sarah Noni Metzner

May Giveaways
* For the month of May we will be featuring one free download of a song off of our new album How to have sex with Canadians. Swing by www.thedonefors.com for your new favourite music.
* The DoneFors are planning a new photo shoot! As you may have noticed, we have a morbid and prevailing death-theme in our promo photos. But we want you to get a shot at killing us off in your own FUN way! If you have an idea for a photo concept, please send your death plot to happiness at thedonefors dot com. If we use your idea you will win a fantastic DoneFors prize pack and coveted bragging rights. *Note: In the past photo concepts, one band member gets the chance to kill off the rest. Paul and Liam haven’t had the chance to kill yet, and their blood-thirst is growing to the point of insatiable. It might be handy to keep that in mind.

Video Video Video
As many of you know, CONartist Film and The DoneFors made a music video in the fall of last year for the song “In a Cornfield”. You can check that out (in HD) (click here). More videos to come! Keep your eye peeled like your lover’s grapes.

Janine Stoll Gets Melancholia

The long-awaited third solo album of The DoneFors front-peanut Janine Stoll is nearing the birth canal. Melancholia (produced and engineered by John MacLean) is a beautiful and sad collection of stripped-down, ambient, contemporary folk ballads (not the Celine kind). Very soon janinestoll.com will walk out of hiding with a fresh face and you will be able to pre-order Melancholia through her website. This gesture is always welcome, because it ensures the Janine will be able to purchase shoes and cars and jets – all of the essentials. Keep your grapes peeled like your lover’s eyes.

Shine Your Face For Mr. Something Something
Paul and Liam’s other band - Mr. Something Something (the Canadian kings of afrobeat) - have a brand new record scarily close to launch. Shine Your Face is an undeniable work of genius. You will need to own a copy of this album to be completed as a human being. For pre-purchase, visit www.mrsomethingsomething.com. Also, be aware that Mr. Something Something will be hitting the road this summer and coming to a festival near you with their eco-awesome, forward-thinking, fully bike-powered live show. These shows have been making appearances in various off-the-grid locations since last summer, and it's a seriously inspiring and truly sustainable idea. For more information about Sound Cycle, check out Mr. Something Something's website.

Dirty Bits
Facts are fun! And here are some fun facts about The DoneFors for you!

* The DoneFors have the same Astrological Synastry as The Beatles and Led Zepplin (we can see you all nodding your heads in a “that makes sense” kind of way).
* Paul doesn’t like to wear jeans. Paul recently almost completely severed off the tip of his left index finger in a bread-knife brawl. Paul likes Middle Eastern food.
* Liam is a Humber jazz bass student. Liam is a closet blogger. Liam’s fiancée Sarah made the beautiful and fancy DoneFors cookies that were sold at the CD release party in February.
* Brian is a producer and engineer of music and he wants to make your next record. Brian likes farmers markets. Brian also plays drums in the band SuperstacK.
* Janine listens to Christmas music in the summer. Janine worries too much. Janine is offering up her freelance web and graphic design skills to the public and she wants your business (www.janinestoll.com/media).

PRESS - The Donefors: How To Have Sex With Canadians, (Independent)

By Doug Taylor, The Coast, Halifax

Following up previous collaborations, Toronto-based Janine Stoll joins forces with two members of Afrobeat band Mr. Something Something in The DoneFors. The songs on How to Have Sex With Canadians are dreamlike concoctions that move along crisply with just a hint of the exotic. "Mouth Full of Marbles" wraps a metaphor-drenched narrative with contraband and a guillotine around a hypnotic hook. Stoll gets sultry on a few numbers that could use a horn or two for ambience. Unrequited love, in "The Last Thing You Do," combines streaking and stalking in hopes the object of her affection will see her on the TV news. Such a tale needs crazier music.

HE CAN FLY HE CAN FLY HE CAN FLY

wanderlusts,

when life gives you nuts you make butter. and then people's throats close up. welcome to the year two thousand an nineteen, where not-so-suddenly old is new and new is so old. soon it's gonna be hip to saran wrap the furniture in the room that you never even hang out in. and you'll only listen to the radio, sitting in a chair in the hallway, by the faux wind up phone, 'cause that's the only place that gets 'faux' reception. only thing is that that stuff will all be digital. but you'll break it (slightly) to make it sound grainy and all retro. or you'll download the 'gramaphone' plugin from Itunes to make it sound quiet and dusty like an old record. the funny papers will be so tame that the funny will elude. the political commentary will breeze over everyone's head. and it will be brought to you c/o a wafer thin monitor. disposable. everything is. but all of the lard in the pie will taste like old times. and therefor; good. just like mom (who cooked crap) made. they're even going to come up with a health conscious (but healthy and gmo) version of lard. be careful out there. what you don't know will kill you. but good music might not. i'm scared of the future. are you? if you want to be scare together and huddle in a bunker, maybe a good place to hangout would be at not my dog on thursday nights in april. the donefors are gonna be hanging out with canned goods and bibles and qurans and all of it, just to get through the thing. we'll play music, cause that's the only thing that makes us feel normal in social situations. but it'll be a safe, happy place. like peter pan. come to a donefors show and you'll find your happy thawt. and then you'll fly.

gumshoes,
janine, paul, liam and brian

PRESS - Review: The Donefors - How To Have Sex With Canadians, independent

By Anne-Marie Brugger, !earshot Magazine, Canada

From the opening track, sounding deliciously zenful, it is impossible not to fall under the spell of Janine Stoll's mellifluous voice. How to Have Sex with Canadians is all about falling under the influence of various tonics and the allure of total strangers, and basking in the innocence of love and life.

The DoneFors gracefully capture the essence of the Canadian spirit with sultry, sexy but unpretentious vocals, lyrics, and music. The 12 jazzy, funky and unpredictable tracks will have listeners escaping the doldrums of everyday life with an ounce (sorry, a gram) of typically Canadian self-deprecation. That's definitely one of our sexier traits. (That, and wearing big woolly socks to bed.) On "In My Blood" for instance, Janine croons: "You keep me tied up/ To a hitchin' post/ I'll take my clothes off/ And offer up a toast/ This one's for the funny bones..." Janine, who penned the lyrics, certainly has a way with words.

The DoneFors are a foursome, each with a strong professional history, including electric guitar and singer-songwriter Paul MacDougall, bass player Liam Smith (both of Mr. Something Something), drummer Brian Lahaie (SuperstacK) and, of course, Janine Stoll (The Ladybird Sideshow).

Ms. Stoll's delicate voice sounds angelic and fragile. Yet the incongruous lyrics have her either "Drunk with apathy", or "Stumbling on the brink/ Of too many beers/ Brain full of hash/ Not enough to numb [her] fear". On "Lemons from Argentina", she slurs "I'm here to waste my brain cells/ ...Hail me a cab I'm sleeping/ In a stranger's bed tonight". It's tragic and poignant but ultimately, it's just about living in the moment and without regret. It's about keeping warm in the company of others, anyone.

The DoneFors invite you to good times in bed, in fields, or anywhere and with a promise to keep you aurally stimulated.

Highly recommended.
