MORLOVE:
British Columbia-based duo Morlove create intricate, acoustic folk songs, but on All of My Lakes Lay Frozen Over, their sound is touched by engaging, unexpected pop nuances as well. Vocalists and multi-instrumentalists Emily Brown and Corwin Fox complement each other well, brushing gently against each other as writers and tastefully restrained singers. Along with near-lullabies like the title track, there are neatly arranged tunes like "Falcon" and "Relative Chemistries," which are propelled by interesting rhythms, strings and floating horns. The lyricism is evocative yet mysterious, presented in high-range voices that are practically angelic. There are jazz and post-rock leanings within things like "Old Perfume," and "When You Come Down" has the frontier shuffle of Calexico coursing through it. All told, there's a unique depth to Morlove's debut record, which sidles up to the edge of the unknown abyss, with its palm safely grasping the handrail. - Exclaim! Magazine

PRESS - The Donefors Dazzle at Flyers cafe

It's rare to find a band not chasing the next big hit.
But meet The DoneFors, the Toronto-based group who played Dunnville's Flyers Café Saturday night, and you'll find that for them, creating their own genre is a necessity, not a gimmick.
The band is comprised of 30-year-old Janine Stoll, 31-year-old Paul MacDougall (both on vocals and guitar), 30-year-old bassist and vocalist Liam Smith and 32-year-old drummer Brian Lahaie.
Listen to a couple of songs from these Canadian musicians and you'll know why they had to create a name for the genre of music they play. Canadiana VanGuard is, states the band's biography, an embodiment of contemporary pop and progressive folk sound -"a musical expression that spans genres, stretches boundaries, and stays rooted in an instrument's organic sound."
The emotions behind The DoneFors' songs are as varied as the members themselves. Stoll said that though her fellow band members bring a variety of backgrounds to the group, "we all gelled" from the first day The DoneFors was formed. Everyone has a part to play.
"If any one of us were to leave and a new member were to join, we would be a completely different-sounding band."
Smith agreed, adding the band aims to set itself apart from mainstream music.
"As a rhythm section, we're concerned with making sure our songs are different and don't sound the same (as other groups')," he said.
Lahaie wouldn't have it any other way.
"I think it's natural to be different," he said. "It's never been a pursuit (for us) to be different."
The DoneFors have made their peace with the fact that will likely not result in one of their songs becoming a major hit.
But Stoll, MacDougall, Smith and Lahaie believe their success is already written in the stars -the band has the same astrological synastry as 1970s rock band Led Zeppelin.
A far cry from the over-produced, Disney-channel pop sensations and angry rocksters populating the airwaves, The DoneFors create music to dream to -light and airy melodies (In a Cornfield) and pieces that make one envision attending a Spring garden party when in reality they're confined to a darkened café in the dead of rural Winter (Lemons from Argentina).
Your average bar band, this group is not.
Saturday's performance brought many a story-telling ballad and peppy, indie-flavoured songs. Stoll's Septembre en France is a jazz-infused piece fit for a lovers' dance, while The Last Thing You Do should soothe many a heart mourning unrequited love.
The group played its first show as an ensemble in Fall of 2006 and played the Junction Arts Festival in Toronto the same year. Their first full-length album How to Have Sex with Canadians was released in early 2009.

FEBRUARY NEWS
What's Becoming of the World?
January was a difficult month. I think it's safe to say that we all felt the rumble from the devastating earthquake that took place in Haiti on Tuesday, January 12th, 2010. The out-pouring of support from the global community has been a humbling thing to witness. But there is still the fear that once Haiti seizes to make front-page news, it will be easily forgotten and replaced with twitter updates from your favourite celebrity gossip sites.
On January 19th, The DoneFors held one of Toronto's first fundraising efforts for the people of Haiti. We turned one of our Cameron House residency nights into a benefit for Doctor's Without Borders and were able to raise $420. Though this is a modest amount, we hope that it's made some difference and found its way into caring and capable hands. Many thanks to the CBC Night News for coming out to cover the event, and to anyone who showed up to make a donation. We encourage everyone to please give whatever you can to help out Haiti. Paul's way to suffer from the winter blues:
- Waiting at the bus stop, but never getting on one.
- Standing in a snow drift for the entire afternoon.
- Eating ice cream for breakfast lunch and dinner.
Janine's way to suffer from the winter blues:
- Drive to and from the laundromat
- eat canned soup
- watch reality tv
- wear the crappiest footwear possible
- wear a good ol' fashioned perma-scowl
Liam's way to suffer from the winter blues:
- Live in a basement and don't go out until the sun is down.
Brian's way to suffer from the winter blues:
- Sleep in until the sun goes down (which is a rather easy thing to do in the winter), or get up with the sun but stay indoors all day because it's so f'n' cold.
- Plan a 'weather permitting' picnic everyday, but watch the weather channel instead, with the volume just loud enough to supply subliminal musak to mope around the house to. Or! The best way to not beat the winter blues...
- Watch the 24 hour news channel 24 hours a day.
Think about other people. Smile at everybody. Eat your greens.

When The DoneFors come to town this Friday from their native Toronto, they’ll be bringing along enough experience to keep them eclectic, at the very least.
Boasting members of Juno-nominated Afro-beat sensation Mr. Something Something, a couple of graduates from the Humber School of Jazz, and a vocalist who describes her solo project as "music for sad people," The DoneFors can leave one scrambling for a genre to grasp to.
"I would say progressive folk, contemporary pop," muses frontwoman Janine Stoll, although she admits, "I wouldn’t be surprised if you’re going to hear a lot of jazz influence.
"We call what we do Canadiana Vanguard, kind of putting a fresh spin on Canadian music," concludes Stoll.
On their whimsically titled debut disc How To Have Sex With Canadians, The DoneFors combine top-notch musicianship and ethereal stream-of-consciousness lyrics to create a series of Impressionistic vignettes that are both engaging and optimistic. While the spacious arrangements sprinkled with vaguely connected lyrical nuggets are sometimes reminiscent of Edie Brickell & The New Bohemians or perhaps Joni Mitchell around her Hejira period, The DoneFors remain impossible to pigeonhole and incessantly upbeat.
And that may or may not change as the band puts the finishing touches on their second album, an exercise Stoll refers to as "archiving your history."
"It kind of ebbs and flows into different directions in terms of genre, but I think it’s going to be a little more cohesive," she says of their as-yet-untitled effort. "When people listen to it they’ll be able to say, "Wow, this is unmistakably a DoneFors album.""
The DoneFors play Irene’s Pub (885 Bank Street) this Friday, January 15th. Opening the show is Ottawa’s own traditional country influenced duo Red Wood Central.

Happy new years, eh?
Holiday hangovers have all but worn off. The sweets are slowly diminishing from the pantry. The YMCA schedule is haunting your conscience. You want to drink more beer, but you feel all guilty about it. You're still an angry driver. You still don't call your parents as much as you should. House could use a good cleaning. The Cameron House Tuesdays from January through March
The DoneFors take on their third residency at The Cameron House in January. This one is for three months, folks! WHAT?!? Swing by the front room every Tuesday from 6pm to 8pm, January through March to find good people, laughs, astounding musical incredibleness, jokes in poor taste, beer for dinner, giant ant art installations on the ceiling, the odd little kid busting a move, the occassional cookie buffet, cold & slushy boots, warm & slushy smiles, and your old pals Janine, Liam, Paul and Brian.
Janine Stoll Melancholia CD Release Party
On Friday, February 12th at the gorgeous Music Gallery in Toronto, The DoneFors will be supporting the release of Janine Stoll's new solo album Melancholia. This is a beautiful album and the event promises to be a show that you will not soon forgot. Admission includes a copy of Melancholia AND a complimentary beverage (beer, wine, soda pop...seriously? The Strip CD Release Party
The DoneFors are thrilled to be special guests for a great band's CD Release Party. The Strip launch their newest edition 'Long gone Lonesome Lullabies' with an anticipated performance at Hugh's Room on Thursday, January 14th. The Ladybird Sideshow LIVE in Hamilton
Catch the legendary Ladybird Sideshow at De La Sol Yoga Studio in Hamilton for a special "House Concert" on Saturday, December 19th. The Ladybird Sideshow are an acoustic collaboration between singer-songwriters Janine Stoll, Melissa McClelland, Lisa Winn and Erin Smith - very special! On the 19th the 'birds will be opening for Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland. Back in the Studio
The DoneFors have been writing and writing, so to make it all real we've started recording at home with Brian at the helm. Keep your ears perked and you might get to hear something new and tasty soon. Or come out to one of our Cameron House residency nights Tuesdays from the beginning of January until the end of March where we will be work shopping new material.

What Paul doesn't want for Christmas:
No more music trinkets for me.
No more government bailouts for the banks.
What Janine doesn't want for Christmas:
A bad sweater. Purple jeans. The Bubonic plague.
What Liam doesn't want for Christmas:
"My first thought is winter. . . but then I think that I'd also not want a hand gun for Christmas. It just seems too dangerous to have around."
What Brian doesn't want for Christmas:
"I definitely don't want anyone to spend their hard earned cash so that I can have something shiny and new...except some nice warm rubber boots.. that's the only exception because nobody wants cold wet feet for Christmas!..that's for sure.... so, I don't want cold feet, frost bite of any kind, or the flu for Christmas."

This is the part of the newsletter where you can catch a glimpse of the inner workings of the band. What makes those guys tick, anyway? This month we've asked The DoneFors respectively who they're biggest musical role models are.
Paul's role models:
- Oliver Nelson
- Adam Rogers

Janine's role models:
#1. Joni Mitchell - Apart from being one of the most brilliant song-writers going, Joni's unflinching eye for quality and detail is completely enviable. I also love the fact that she started making records well in to her late twenties. It makes me feel far younger than I sometimes do.
#2. Patty Griffin - The simplicity of Patty's words and melodies is what makes them so delicious. She tells a beautiful story without wasting words. A career that she leads with grace and talent shows a sincere maturing. She's always been best in my books.
#3. Emma-Lee - Local indie bell and dear pal. Emma-Lee gets results because she works hard and has the vision, drive, and talent that everyone wishes they had to make it in this tough industry. I'm forever tearing pages from her book. Not hard on the eyes, either.
Liam's role models:
#1. John Coltrane (tenor sax) - He was always searching to expand his voice and to plunge deeper into the mystical subtext of sound and music. In the later part of his career, he considered music to be a conversation with the divine. Not many people can express the universe in a song, but he could.
#2 Jason Mercer (bassist) - I am not familiar with the larger body of Jason Mercer's work. What I do know is that when I listened to his work on Ani Difranco's album, "To the Teeth" , it was the first time I'd really considered the melodic contribution that a bassist could make to a song.
#3 Kieran Overs (bassist) - I am continually impressed at how he makes more from less. His playing always imparts the need for a strong sense of functionality and voice leading by the bassist.
